Transition from Clumpy to Smooth Angular Diameter Distances

چکیده

Distance relations in a locally inhomogeneous universe are expected to behave like the Dyer-Roeder solution on small angular scales and the Friedmann-Robertson-Walker solution on large angular scales. Within a simple compact clump model the transition between these asymptotic behaviors is demonstrated and quantified. The redshift dependent transition scale is of order a few arcseconds; this implies it should have little influence on large angular scale cosmological tests such as the volume-redshift relation but possibly significant effects on arcsecond angular diameter measurements of radio galaxies and AGNs. For example, at z = 2 on arcsecond scales a clumpy flat universe mimics the angular diameter distance of a smooth Ω = 0.27 model.

Angular Diameter Distances in Clumpy Friedmann Universes

Solving null-geodesic equations, behavior of angular diameter distances is studied in inhomogeneous cosmological models, which are given by performing N-body simulations with the CDM spectrum. The distances depend on the separation angle θ of ray pairs, the mass m and the radius rs of particles consisting of galaxies and dark matter balls, and cosmological model parameters. The calculated dista...

The Role of Gas in the Merging of Massive Black Holes in Galactic Nuclei . II . Black Hole Merging in a Clumpy Disk

Using high-resolution SPH numerical simulations, we investigate the effects of gas on the inspiral and merger of a massive black hole binary. This study is motivated by the very massive nuclear gas disks observed in the central regions of merging galaxies. Here we present results that expand on the treatment in a previous work (Escala, Larson, Coppi & Mardones 2004; henceforth Paper I), by stud...

Clumpy tori around active galactic nuclei

We discuss the question whether the matter in dusty tori around active galactic nuclei has a smooth or a clumpy structure. Nenkova, Ivezic & Elitzur (2002) have argued that the lack of emission feature in the SEDs of type 1 AGN galaxies combined with a clear absorption feature in type 2 AGN can be explained if the circumnuclear dust is distributed in discrete clumps. Our aim is to verify this. ...

Cepheid distances from Interferometry

Long baseline interferometry is now able to resolve the pulsational change of the angular diameter of a significant number of Cepheids in the solar neighborhood. This allows the application of a new version of the Baade-Wesselink (BW) method to measure their distance, for which we do not need to estimate the star’s temperature. Using angular diameter measurements from the VLT Interferometer, we...
